Orana is the Maori word for welcome or place of refuge. The Wildlife Trust was founded by a small group of interested people who called themselves The South Island Zoological Society. In 1970 they had a vision of a wildlife park for Christchurch. Six years later, their dream became a reality with the opening of Orana Park, a haven for endangered and other animals, a place of welcome for people and for creatures which voluntarily choose to live here.

The Marae offers a chance for tourists, school groups and local people to experience Maori culture in an attraction that is unique to Christchurch and the South Island.
The Marae provides daily tours for school groups and tourists. Experienced guides, employed from local iwi, provide explanations of the culture, customs, history and tradition represented by the Marae. Nga Hau E Wha Marae has attracted more than 100 people a week to its tours since their inception in 1991, more than 30% of these were visitors from the local community.
One of the most successful aspects of the Marae's tourism programme has been the Night of Maori Magic.

Christchurch is a beautiful city, with large green parks, many lovely gardens and the gently meandering Avon River flowing through the heart of it.
The city is flat, and has many purpose built cycle-ways.
It's perfect for cycling, and a guided tour on bikes is the best way to really see the city.
Join us for a wonderful relaxing 2 hour guided bike tour.
